Episode 72 - How to feel rested + calm while achieving more than ever

I’m no stranger to burnout. Starting in 2008, chronic fatigue had me pretty much housebound for years, and as weird as it sounds, I count that experience as a privilege. I was forced to set boundaries that I know I wouldn't have set had I not been forced to.

That experience changed the way I approached achieving success because I could no longer work myself to the ground. The consequences were too great.

Instead, I had to find smart and unconventional ways of working so that I could prioritise my health. To me, that’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Everything Counts

One thing I've come to realise through my coaching practice is that everything that is happening in a person’s life is relevant. Often when I’m working with a client, halfway through a program something unexpected will happen and that then forms part of the curriculum. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like a good thing, like a time of bereavement. Other times it can be a good distraction like a new relationship or pregnancy.

People often think they need to separate what’s happening in life from the work they need to do to reach their goals, but everything is connected. We need to make space for life to happen and embrace the fact that the journey might be a little more windy and slow than we initially thought it would.

Make Time For Yourself

One of the biggest precursors to burnout is ignoring the extra stuff that's going on in life and not acknowledging what they’re really spending their time on. They feel stressed and rushed all the time which is not at all conducive to being creative.

Life will always happen and extra pressures like everyday errands, commuting time, health challenges and relationships will use up mental, emotional, and physical bandwidth. It can be really helpful to write out everything you do on an average day to really see where you spend your time and then make extra space for yourself to breathe a little and do the things that light you up. That way, the pressure is off, you feel calm and way more able to work toward the things you want to achieve. Yes, it might take a little longer, but maybe with this newfound peace, you’ll reach your goals way faster than expected. Either way, you’re moving forward.

Everything you need to achieve your goals is already in motion. By staying present, open, and curious, you can harness the magic of the present moment to propel you forward on your path to success. Trust in the process, honour your pace and expect the unexpected.
