 What is hypnosis?

Let’s start by talking about what hypnosis isn’t.

  • Acting like a chicken on stage

  • Being out of control

  • Watching a pendulum swing and then falling on the floor unconscious only to wake with no memory of said chicken-walking.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Not to feel hypnotised

  • To feel relaxed

  • All trance is about learning to go into trance - you can expect to become really great at being hypnotised, and the results that come from it.

Hypnosis is the art of making a suggestion,

and accepting that suggestion.

It’s as simple as this. However, it works on such a subtle, energetic level that we often miss the hypnosis that is everywhere in our lives.

The most beautiful thing about hypnosis is that it bypasses what we call the critical faculty - or the gate-keeper of the subconscious mind.

Have you ever tried to give yourself an affirmation, while looking in the mirror, and it just didn’t sink in? The critical faculty of our brains, the gate-keeper to the subconscious mind is what often prevents these conscious thoughts from being deeply ingrained in our subconscious in a way that leaves us not having to think about them. It’s there for good reason. It stops us from being suggestible to just any old thing.

Sometimes we’re suggestible to programming that hasn’t been helpful - and we aren’t even thinking about it consciously because it bypassed the critical faculty - and yet when we say positive things consciously, it doesn’t feel like it works! The critical Faculty is the reason for this. It’s there to keep you safe. But - if you’re conditioned to live in a state of mind where, for example, you don’t accept compliments, or you speak negatively to yourself - the critical faculty can work against you - only “letting in”, what lines up with what’s already there.

We want to make sure what’s already there, lines up with who you want to be.

Hypnosis is a tool that allows us to gently bypass the critical faculty of our subconscious mind, and gently reprogram what’s there, to allow you to have more freedom and peace - anything you want, really - without needing to consciously think about it. From stopping smoking, losing weight, improving your sleep to gaining more confidence and improving your life..

Listen to the Soundcloud audio below on ‘What is Hypnosis’, and it will shed some more light on this for you:

You will see that this is so much more than just, sleep hypnosis, quit smoking hypnosis or hypnosis for weight loss. After you have listened below - there is more so keep reading so you have access to all the information about this valuable life changing tool.

What is hypnosis? - Audio Transcript

Welcome to our personal self-hypnosis mini workshop. I'm so excited to have you. I'm so excited to talk about the topic of hypnosis in particular, self-hypnosis. How to use it for yourself, and to teach you one of my favorite techniques that I teach clients all over the world. To manage their state and create incredible shifts in their life in their businesses and their relationships and their work in their perception of their entire reality, in their skill sets everything utilizing this one tool, self hypnosis.

So I'm really excited to have you. I just want to take a little moment to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land upon which I live and work with people. I acknowledge the traditional custodians and the elders, past, present, and emerging. And I want to give you the opportunity as well to take a moment to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land from which you are listening to this audio lecture.

So, I'm so happy to have you here in this audio, you'll receive a really powerful introduction to the Art of Self Hypnosis and alongside this audio we have a beautiful PDF workbook (sign up above to get free access to this PDF and the full course) that you can follow along with some notes in there that you can follow along with. So hypnosis is or self hypnosis is really otherwise known as the art of self suggestion, and once you've finished listening to this audio track, please do feel free to use the PDF as a reference guide to just help you remember how to take yourself into that hypnotic state.

So, first of all, let's talk about what is hypnosis.

    1. We'll talk about what hypnosis is and isn't, and what you can expect.

    2. We'll give you some examples of what trance feels like, in other words being in a hypnotic state and things you can do with self hypnosis.

    3. The keys to powerful self hypnosis, like the things that need to be in place in order for this to really work.

    4. Then I'm going to teach you one of the most powerful tools I've ever learned, it is the Inner Sanctuary tool.

    5. I'm going to show you how to do it. And I'm going to give you the steps to access it again and again, in a matter of seconds.

    6. After that, I'm going to share with you some more ideas for things that you can do inside of your hypnotic state, your self programming your self hypnosis state, so that you can really, really make this your own.

    7. We’ll talked about the benefits and then I'll share with you where you can learn some more about this, if you want to but I really feel like this is going to be quite comprehensive.

So let's come back to what is hypnosis and let's start by talking about really what hypnosis is not.

So a lot of the time, when I start to teach about hypnosis, people get really funny they think that it's about feeling completely out of control. Like they think about stage hypnosis, like hypnotist shows where somebody brings people up on stage and they end up acting like a chicken with no control over themselves, you know, watching the pendulum swing and then falling on the floor unconscious and to wake like, not remembering that they walked around like a chicken or jumped into a freezing cold ice bath and felt nothing.

And that could not be further from what hypnosis, the essence of what hypnosis, truly is.

And that's what I want to dispel as a myth with you today. But then I teach you how to hypnotize yourself so there's so much to this, and I want to keep this concise but I really also want to dispel these myths. So when you're talking or watching somebody who is a hypnotist and watching the hypnotist show. What I want you to pay attention to next time, is how the hypnotist chooses their subjects. Right, so usually there'll be a whole bunch of people, and they will pick people from the audience. And then they'll say, Okay, you sit down, you sit down, you sit down and they'll have a few people left and we'll do another trick, and then they'll say, Okay, you sit down, you sit down all the way over there. Sit down. They'll do another trip, and they'll kind of whittle it down to like one or two people doing something incredible or seeming magic on the stage.

So what's happening in these experiences is really the master of hypnosis is doing something called The Art of Suggestion. And what happens is, like, in a stage hypnosis show, the person who the hypnotist is making suggestions at the unconscious level, to a person, but they're never really out of control, they are choosing at each point to go along with what's happening in other words, they are accepting the suggestion.

Now, I think I might be completely destroying the magic of hypnosis in describing this to you but what I really want to do is highlight that all of hypnosis is about accepting a suggestion.

So someone's saying to you, can you please close the door and you walk up, or can you close the door, and you walk up and close the door, the suggestion was that you might close the door. It wasn't, can you please get up, walk over there and close the door, although that might also be a suggestion, and we accept the suggestion by saying yeah I can close the door. That's as far and wide as hypnosis goes. And the beautiful thing about this, is we can use hypnosis, like we're always in a trance, and I'll get to that in a moment, but we can use hypnosis to really really empower us. We can also use it to completely disempower us because we are always walking around in some state of trance.

So hypnosis is not, you know, doing out of control, acting like a chicken watching a pendulum swing, you know, not remembering anything.

    But here's what hypnosis is, it's accepting a suggestion,…

… it's not really feeling like you're under any spell that you hypnotized, but more so feeling relaxed. And it's about learning to be better at accepting suggestions or in other words, learning all trance is about learning to go into trance or being better at trance. So hypnosis is really the art of making a suggestion or accepting the suggestion that is made to you. It's as simple as this.

However, it works on such a subtle and energetic level that we often miss the hypnosis, that is everywhere in our lives.

So think about the different kinds of ways that you are suggested ideas and we accept them. So let's say you are listening to one of your favorite songs and the lyrics of the songs is like 'put your hands up in the air'. I don't know which song it might be, but you're at the concert, and you actually do put your hands up or you get your lighter out and you flick it on and start waving it around in the air, You've accepted the suggestion from the musician to put your hands up in the air.

When somebody tells you, 'You're beautiful, you're amazing, you're wonderful, you have really helped me today', and you feel it as an incredible compliment you've accepted that person's suggestion. Similarly, when someone says, 'You're so beautiful' you go, this old thing that's not, you know, whatever, we're not accepting that suggestion.

Another great example of accepting suggestions is kind of a funny one is that we accept the suggestion that something along the lines of, like, say, a cola flavored beverage is a drink, like when you think about it. It's a, it's a liquid. It's made of chemicals, and it's placed into a container that is shaped in the form of a bottle that we have a drink from that bottle is placed into a refrigerator in a drinks refrigerator in the drinks section of the corner store or to the vending machine or whatever, and we accept the suggestion that that's a drink. So hypnosis is really everywhere. Where we are accepting suggestions.

Now, you can accept suggestions that work for you, you can accept suggestions that don't work for you and I'm going to show you how to actually manage the type of suggestions that you're available for and not available for, which is so fun.

But for now, let's just know that hypnosis is not about feeling hypnotizing and acting like a chicken. It's about the art of accepting a suggestion.

Now the most beautiful thing about hypnosis is that it bypasses what we call the critical faculty or the gatekeeper or the door bitch of the subconscious mind.

Have you ever charged with the use of an affirmation or say something lovely to yourself while you're looking in the mirror 'I am beautiful', and it just didn't sink in. The critical faculty of our brains, the gatekeeper to the subconscious mind is what prevents these conscious thoughts from being deeply ingrained into our subconscious in a way that leaves us not having to think about them but actually accepting them as our way of being, because I do believe I'm beautiful.

Sometimes we are suggestible to programming that has not been helpful. And we aren't really even thinking about it consciously, because that suggestion bypassed that critical faculty and was accepted into the subconscious and yet when we say positive things, consciously, it doesn't feel as powerful, because of the same reasons sometimes that critical faculty is the reason for this. So, depending on whether you've accepted suggestions that you are, that are positive and that work for you or you have happened to have accepted suggestions that were not powerful for you. You can change this to whatever it is that you want, and hopefully what you want is to accept suggestions that are always just only ever working for you, but…

… please know that sometimes the reason why these compliments or suggestions or affirmations or nice things that people say about you. They don't land is because you might have have like this critical faculty, this gatekeeper that really rejects that, really rejects that as a reality.

When we can bypass that critical faculty. We go straight to the subconscious and exactly plant the seed of that suggestion there.

So it just feels like our natural nature, or our way of being, or just how life is instead of it feeling like an effortful thing that we need to consistently tell ourselves and remind ourselves and think like and actor like.

And this is why I love hypnosis, it is because it requires a little bit of intentionality, you know like an upfront kind of process or practice, and from there on in,…

…it's just effortless, it just is what it is, we don't have to think about it.

This is why I love hypnosis.

Because if you can bypass that critical faculty, plant suggestions and seeds that are so positive and powerful.

And because you've bypassed that critical faculty there's no resistance to it.

    You have a wonderful life.

So I want to give you an example at this point, I remember when I lived years ago 2013 when I lived in a town called Santiago, Chile, and I met a man there who was studying with me inside an entrepreneurial boot camp. That's a story for another day. And he was not someone that I sort of really got along with very well, to be honest, but we had some really great conversations. And the reason why we didn't get along, well, maybe you'll see in a moment. He was a pickup artist. And he was someone who.. like he was smart, and he was an interesting sort of a guy. He wasn't the best looking fellow, and he was a little abrasive, as far as I was concerned, but he used to pick up women everywhere we went as a group when we were out. And he had an amazing story.

So, pick up artists stuff aside, which I don't really particularly agree with. What he told me in his story is so fascinating. He said he was somebody who was picked on at school and bullied, and he's really,… he was quite a nice person. He wasn't very confident, and he was a little bit unhealthy, he didn't feel good so he didn't dress very well, and he really lacked a lot of confidence. And he ended up moving in and living with a very, very, very well known, apparently some author, pickup artist guy who wrote a book on the Art of Pickup. I mean a whole other conversation there again as well. But he said what happened was, living with this guy. When he moves in with him, his confidence was rock bottom. I think he'd been dumped by somebody and he didn't love his work and he wasn't living the life that he really, really wanted to live but this is a great example of like hardcore external effort to shift that critical faculty, right.

So his housemate literally everyday said to him, 'you're a great guy, you're confident you're an amazing human, chicks love you, you've got a way with words, you're so fantastic, you know exactly what you're doing, you are a catch. You're such a catch. You're a great guy. Chicks love you', and onward, and he would do that every day, in some way. And this guy you know, what he said to me was, you know, after a while, like the things that were negative about me, that I used to say all the time to myself, I eventually started believing them, but living with this guy. The kind, confident, encouraging things that he used to say about me. Eventually I started believing those as well.

And being the little hypnotist that I am, I knew exactly what had happened. Over time, that suggestion was done so consistently and so powerfully and because he had raport and respect for this person he was open, his gatekeeper was quite open to this person. Eventually, the gatekeeper just stepped to the side and that was what was laid in as his dominant vibration inside of his subconscious mind.

And so this required the effort that often people aren't willing to put in when it comes to affirmations. But it bypassed that critical faculty over time and he started to see himself as a confident catch and he changed jobs and he became really interested in so many different things and he became very confident at picking up women, which is a whole other story in and of itself, but I just found that piece really, really interesting.

So when I've worked with this tool and done hypnosis with clients, I mean, everything from becoming a world champion at a sport, without being able to train properly because we've had injuries or we've had, like, just things get in the way of being able to train properly to helping people quit smoking, to getting through bouts of feeling depressed and anxious to just general well being like doing some really, really exceptional to being a complete superfreak at whatever it is that they do.

Like hypnosis works at every level.

It's a tool that allows us to really gently bypass that critical faculty of our subconscious mind and just gently reprogram what's there, to allow you to have more freedom and peace,…

…anything you want really, without needing to consciously think about it. And that's the key. The key to bypassing the critical faculty is to be in a state of relaxed, awareness, just like you feel right before you fall asleep. If you can recreate that state, suggestions will land with ease.

The other time to really bypass that critical faculties is when it happens consistently over time. So with self hypnosis, if you want to do it the effort way, you just do it, like my friend who said his housemate just kind of bombarded him with confidence and like positive compliments and things like that.

Hypnosis is about doing it like in one go and the way that we do that is by relaxing and opening and that's where we become suggestible in good way.

Now every time that you accept a suggestion that's made to you, your under a level of trance.

Trance is just a state of trust and responsiveness and openness to suggestion, it's really just feeling relaxed, it doesn't mean that you walk around like a chicken that would be staged hypnosis which is different. And being suggestible by the way, is a really good thing.

You see the better you are being suggestible, the better you will be at hypnotizing yourself to experience, and create anything that you want.

Now, just in case. What's coming up for you right now there's a fear that you might be too suggestible or that you might be suggestible to something negative, someone saying something, and you're not liking it. Here, in this course, we program ourselves to believe and know that we are only suggestible to ideas that support us in creating more of what we want in our lives, nothing less.

So, one of the most powerful suggestions you can give yourself in your hypnotic practice, because truth is, we are all suggestible to what we allow ourselves to be suggestible to, so if you make suggestion to yourself,

I'm only suggestible to things that are good for me, good for others, good for the planet, or get closer to the things that I want, you will instantly know, well perhaps not instantly, I can't say that. But you will start to program yourself to really just not notice things that are not helpful for you.

Now, there are different levels of trance from being "asleep" right and deeply programming new ideas into the subconscious to being fully awake and simply accepting a suggestion from someone. This can have really beneficial but, like I mentioned, also detrimental effects if we aren't careful of what kind of suggestions we allow into our lives. What we suggest to ourselves, that was suggested for, for example, perhaps you can recall a time when someone says something to you that was not fun to hear. It wasn't nice it did not help you, it wasn't fun and it affected you negatively for maybe a long time or a short time, maybe even still does affect you negatively.

And the best example I could think of is perhaps a like a teacher from school, or a sibling or a parent or like something someone said that's just kinda stuck to you and does not feel good. This is an example where hypnosis is a really powerful way to override our negative conditioning because we can go in and override that.

But also it helps us become aware that at some point we become suggestible to negative conditioning and all we're doing with this whole process is pretty much exactly what happened when you accepted the negative suggestion, we're just going to override it with a positive suggestion, not doing anything different to how you originally created that negative thought, we are just overriding it.

So anytime someone gives you a suggestion, and you accept it, whether it be consciously or unconsciously, you're in some of your trance.

    So here's some examples of trance;

    1. The first one is deep. And an example would be, have you ever driven home from work, and you have pulled into your driveway and gone- I don't even remember driving here. It's like, that's a really deep state of trance when you just do things, unconsciously without thinking about them.

    2. Another state of deep trance, for example, would be like going through a formal hypnotic process, and being half asleep and half awake while programming the new beliefs into the subconscious and that's what we are going to be doing today.

    3. A medium state of trance is being in raport with somebody, so when we have it that deep state of trust and responsiveness and we're awake, and we're talking, and you notice that you're sitting in a way that matches or mirrors one another or you have like a feeling of connection even though you may not know each other all that well, or you have a level of connection and raport with another person, where you can say something and you know that they are going to understand it, that's a medium state of trance.

    4. Another example of medium state of trance is automatic movements like raising your hands at a concert.

    5. A great example of a light state of trance is just simply feeling relaxed, or being in a heavy floating feeling.

So can you see by these examples like that trance and hypnosis, it's not as woo woo, crazy, as you may have thought.

Now in the next audio. I am going to show you what sort of things you can do with self hypnosis and the keys to making it super super powerful.
